Generational Reclamation Agent

Could this be you?

  • Do you recognize and grieve over the destructive patterns in your family line?
  • Were you often labeled the “scapegoat or troublemaker” in your family?
  • Are you willing to address conflict and seek to find and introduce new practices for your family?
  • Do you feel called to pray for generational sins and curses to be broken?

If you can answer YES to one or more of these questions, I have good news for you. God has designed and destined you to act as a Generational Reclamation Agent!

You may be asking, “What’s a Generational Reclamation Agent?”

GRA’s have the heart, courage and desire to see their family become free from the iniquities and curses of the past and the obstacles of the present. God has appointed at least one Generational Reclamation Agent in every generation of a family bloodline. Their calling is to affect not just their present life, but to see future generations in their family line to be free to follow God without the hindrances and bondages that have hindered their lives and those who came before them.

Being a Generational Reclamation Agent isn’t for the faint of heart.

It takes courage to recognize and step out of destructive patterns. Many in our families are content to follow the way of the status quo and live out the same story as those who came before them. It is often easier in the short run but leads to greater death and destruction with every passing generation.

I am a Generational Reclamation Agent in our family.

It all started when I underwent a “Restoring the Foundations” process. I needed to give quite a bit of family history and it activated my curiosity to find out more about my ancestors. I realized I didn’t have a lot of information about those who came before me. I discovered that my aunt, who is seven years older than my mother, knew about a family Bible on their father’s side that had a genealogy in it. When I was going to see her, I asked her to bring copies of those pages so I could see who my family members were. I was very surprised to discover that the Duncan side of our family had owned plantations in Chattanooga, Tennessee, all the way back to 1767.

When I turned to look at the second copy, I was horrified to find an entire page filled with several columns entitled “Black Births.” My daughter and I did a collective gasp and it took me several minutes to come out of the disorientation that my family bloodline had owned slaves.

In the days that followed my discovery, I asked the Lord what we were to do. He gently guided me to a repentance process that we could follow. He showed me that my mother and my siblings needed to be a part of it, and our children could be invited . . .  but not required to participate. I spent time praying and fasting asking the Lord to prepare my family members for my invitation and to be willing to participate in the process.

We lived out of state from my parents and siblings, but a couple of months later we made plans to all meet in the Colorado mountains for Thanksgiving. I approached everyone with the opportunity to go through a repentance process during our stay. Everyone said yes, except one child.

So, we gathered in a bedroom and went through the process I designed. (If you would like a copy of it, please leave a comment at the end of the blog and you will be emailed one). After it was over, we all felt like we’d been to a spiritual spa, light and refreshed, and feeling very clean.

So, why did the actions of my ancestors up to two hundred and fifty years ago have impact on our current family’s life?

We may be used to looking for the good things that get passed down in a family. Many of us can point to grandparents who prayed for us and know they are the ones who made a difference in our faith. Bill Johnson, from Bethel Church, can point to several generations of pastors in his family, and his son has followed in his footsteps.

The same is true for our ancestors who lived destructive lives.

Their actions create open doors that our mutual enemy, the legalistic devil, uses to come into our “spiritual house” to steal whatever he likes. He is usually crafty enough to make it small enough so that we don’t notice right away, until one day we discover that our house has been completely cleared out. This is usually the crisis point where we say “Enough Already!”

But then, what do we do about it?

Our Reclaim Team developed a process in the Reclamation Journey that takes people through a Generational Reclamation Prayer that unlocks the blocks and treasures of our past.

This is an extensive prayer that asks the Lord to reveal the secret things that we don’t know about the generational sins and curses our ancestors committed. We recognize God’s promise in Jeremiah 33:3 as our invitation to discover what’s been covered in darkness for centuries:

It’s been amazing what we discover when we partner with Jesus the King in the reclamation process. During one prayer time, I saw almost like a movie, a man terrorizing his wife, pushing her against a wall with the knife at her neck. I argued with the Lord, telling him that I didn’t want to share this crazy thought with the man for whom we were praying. But, the Lord insisted and I shared it. It turns out that he knew that his grandmother’s father had killed his wife and seven of his children--everyone, but his grandmother. How did he do it? By stabbing them with a knife.

This is a rather extreme example, but through the process of praying for many people, we never cease to be surprised at what God reveals. We then walk through a simple process of repentance, renouncing, removal and replacement for both the prayer participant and their ancestors. After this is section is finished, we get to the Treasures of our past.

Just as everyone has generational sins and curses that impact our lives, we are also given Generational Blessings that are meant to be passed forward from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, because many generations haven’t had one whose stepped up to act as a GRA, these blessings are often like treasures from shipwrecks that sink to the bottom of the ocean.

Discovering these blessings brings great joy, like a long anticipated Christmas surprise. The blessings often dramatically change the prayer participants life….sometimes immediately. The biggest gift we’ve discovered, is that the blessings not only impact their lives, but also the lives of their current family members!

One woman discovered that God intended for the women in their family to be teachers of spiritual truths. Generation after generation, the women in their family had been shut down and unable to teach. But, after discovering their blessing to be teachers, this woman has been set free to move into her birthright to take both her medical knowledge and spiritual insights to bring new insights for how God is moving to heal his beloved people.

GRA’s have one more area of opportunity. This is to bless the generations that follow them. God has given us practices through both declarations and decrees to bless our family members that we may never meet until heaven. He has also shown us how to do intentional acts that create foundations for those who come after us to follow.

Recently, the Lord impressed on me to give my parents a 65th wedding anniversary party, showing me that by doing this, we would be building a greater foundation of marriage in our family line.  So, we gathered their 30 family members and spent an entire day, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., celebrating and honoring their legacy of marriage. We have already seen good fruit come from our intentional act.

So, how about you?  Is your heart pounding as you read this blog? Is it resonating with your spirit?

Let me ask you:

  • What questions do you have?
  • What actions do you feel called to take?

I’d love to hear from you so I can encourage your calling to be a Generational Reclamation Agent. If you know others whom you suspect may be a GRA, please send this blog to them so they can be encouraged as well.

Let me finish our time together with a prayer for you:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for highlighting the reality of your creation and call for some of your beloved children to partner with you to act as Generational Reclamation Agents. I ask that you give (your name) the courage and supernatural power to respond to your call to see their family bloodline set free. As they come before you, reveal the secret things in their family line so they can repent, renounce, remove and replace them. And, give (your name), the gift of unlocking their generational treasures so they can begin to live them immediately, as well as see them released to their future generations! Amen.
